Traces from the past

A museum is dedicated to the famous female divers on Jeju Island, South Korea.

Opened in 2006 to preserve the tradition and share the culture of Haenyeo, the museum is located at 26 Haenyeobang-mulgwan-gil, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-Si.

So-hee and Jung-min talk about their daily lives as Haenyeo. They reveal the reasons why they chose to be divers and the risks of the job.

More informations

The museum is composed of 4 exhibition rooms covering a total of 4002 m² :

The first room is called "the life of a Haenyeo". It shows the daily life of these women between 1960 and 1970 (habitat, customs, clothing, objects...).

The second room, "the Haenyeo workplace", refers to all the tools used by the women divers and their evolution over time.

The third room is devoted to "The professional life of the Haenyeo", presenting their link with the sea through video testimonies.

The fourth room is dedicated to children, allowing them to discover and understand the work of women divers through videos and fun activities.

A lot of photographs and historical archives are on display to explain what it means to "be a Haenyeo". In addition, the museum also includes an observatory, a garden, a rest area and a souvenir shop. Every week, visitors can attend performances by the "sea women". In order to pass on and preserve this heritage, these women sing and dance to traditional music from the Haenyeo culture.

BACK

"Today, there are only four thousand haenyeo left on the island. More than half of them are over seventy years old. Many, like Young-sook and the Kang sisters, are much older than that. No one follows them into the sea. Young-sook's daughters and others like them have traded in their overalls for business suits or hotel uniforms. Now, looking at the elderly faces around her, Young-sook thinks that she already belongs to a kind of myth, and that soon they will all disappear. "
